We can help you get your hat for race day sorted, but there's so much else to know about having a good, fashionable day at the races that we thought we'd put it in one place for you and give you the low down on the best racing fashion blogs and info out there. We've started with Australia, but we hope we can expand this to the World's racing calendar one day!

Racewear Competitions

Myer Fashions on the Field (FOTF) - This is the most prestigious and well known in Australia, with the National final being held each year on Oaks Day of the Melbourne Cup carnival. There is some serious prize money at stake with a prize pool of over $200,000 at the finals and up to $50,000 at the State finals, this is a competition worth winning!

Competition Criteria

Selecting the right outfit that meets and beats the criteria is key as competition is fierce out there, the official criteria are listed below:

  • Style and originality
  • Appropriateness of the outfit for the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the individual
  • Attention to detail with accessories
  • Understanding and interpretation of the current fashion trends
  • Grooming and deportment. Suitability of the outfit for the raceday
  • Suitability of the outfit for the climate of the season and of the day - for millinery that means straw for Spring/Summer, felt for Autumn/Winter
  • Female contestants must have appropriate headwear to complement their racewear in order to enter

Chadstone Fashion Stakes - hosted by Melbourne Racing Club with the finals at Caulfield Cup, this is the other major racing fashion competition worth winning with a prize pool of over $100,000 at the finals.

Criteria for this competition are quite similar to FOTF being as follows:

"Entrants are encouraged to showcase the very best in stylish Spring racing fashion and millinery and are judged on their overall outfit, accessories and attention to detail, seasonal appropriateness and deportment."
